Train, Travel, Perform: A Caffeine Guide for Athletes on the Move
You've built a training routine that works. You know your pre-workout window, your dose, what caffeine feels like when it's doing its job.
Then you travel. A marathon in another city. A trek to Spiti. A cycling event three states away. The infrastructure that supports your routine at home disappears and caffeine becomes an inconvenient variable.
Why Caffeine Still Matters When You're Moving

Caffeine at Altitude: What the Science Actually Says
If you trek or train at elevation — Spiti, Ladakh, Kedarnath — you've probably heard to avoid caffeine at high altitude. This is largely a myth.
A study conducted at Everest Base Camp (5,345 metres) found caffeinated and non-caffeinated participants showed identical urine output and identical hydration markers. The dehydration fear doesn't hold up in the research, particularly for habitual caffeine users.
In fact, caffeine at altitude may be actively beneficial. Research in the International Journal of Sports Medicine found cross-country skiers who took caffeine at 2,900 metres were significantly faster than those who took a placebo, with a more pronounced improvement at altitude than at sea level.
Fun fact: If you're a habitual caffeine user, do not stop your intake when you travel to high altitude. The symptoms of caffeine withdrawal, including headache, fatigue, and irritability, are nearly identical to those of Acute Mountain Sickness. The Portability Problem
